Friends of Kenya's objective is to help young Kenyan's develop sustainable livelihoods through programs that encourage skills, enterprise and leadership training.
Friends of Kenya
Friends of Kenya is a not for profit Kenyan Company, limited by Guarantee, incorporated on 27th November 2002. It was set up at the instigation of the Friends of Africa Foundation, a UK registered charity and non-profit making Public Corporation in the USA.
Friends of Kenya intends to work with existing Kenyan organisations to implement carefully evaluated projects in the following areas:
- Sustainable income generation - 'Adopt a group', is an initiative where individuals, friends and families in the UK are adopting young womens groups and supporting them with capital to either open or boost businesses of their choice. These womens groups are members of partner NGO's/CBO/s. If you & your family or business would like to adopt a group, Click 'donate online' and complete an enquiry form and we'll match you with the most suitable group.
- Skills and enterprise training - Friends of Kenya's first project was in partnership with St. Joseph's Catholic Mission in Mlolongo, an Applied Skills Training Centre, linking the needs of young people from rural areas to the demand by Kenya's garment making industry.
- Leadership, ethics and entrepreneurial development - Friends of Kenya is in the process of developing a curriculum for Friends of Kenya clubs in primary and secondary schools. The Friends of Kenya clubs will sensitise young people to enterprise development and give them training in Leadership and Ethics.
- Friends of Kenya Business Mentors Network - This is a national network of Business persons who give pro bono time to youth businesses in the form of advice and counseling.
- Friends of Kenya is also in the process of constructing a youth centre in Ngong (on a five acre site) called The Uongozi Centre. The Uongozi Centre is designed to be a place where young people from all sectors of society - the privileged and the disadvantaged, in school or in the workplace can gather and enjoy opportunities of mixing together in the process of acquiring essential life skills. The Centre will benefit Young Kenyans who will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, ethical standards, enterprise and creativity in a secure environment - essential to their all round development and increasingly recognized as vital to Kenya’s national progress. Also The local Masai community will benefit from direct access to clean water from the site's own borehole. Voluntary service projects run from the Centre will help meet other needs (education and healthcare) whilst respecting and creating awareness of the Masai traditions and culture.
